What is Social Installations?
What if a podcast went beyond discussing ideas — what if it actually brought them to life?
The idea for the Social Installations docu-series grew from a PhD project rabbit hole and explores how the intersection of creative agency, transformational creativity, and trust relate to what it means to be a woman at this time in history. The result is a real-time collaborative docu-series in which four women dream up a “something,” plan it together on air in real time, and then endeavor to make it happen in the world — publicly and without a script.
The catch? The project only happens if our audience financially supports it.
The experimental project incorporates podcasting, social media, and documentary film making. As the podcast episodes launch, we invite others in to participate, to be curious, to take a leap of faith. Social Installations is about the human connections that unfold when we follow ideas down uncertain paths together.
The title “Social Installations” draws on the concept of “creative thinging,” developed by Oxford researcher Lambros Malafouris — the idea that creativity doesn’t just happen in our heads, but through action, collaboration, and engagement with the world around us. Social Installations embodies this, aiming to demonstrate that the crossing from idea to thing is where transformation lives.
Season One: The Road Trip
Five days. Four destinations. One documentary. If we get there.
During Season One, four middle-aged women who all work in the arts and entertainment industry plan a road trip in real time on the podcast, without discussing the trip beforehand. Each woman chose one destination and a “thing” — an unscripted creative act in a real location.
Across the episodes, each revealed her ideas as they discussed how creativity shapes their lives. The podcast follows the full planning process: the ideas, the negotiations, and the final decisions. Everything is documented as it happens. Nothing is predetermined.
The Risk and Why That Matters
The road trip only happens if this campaign is funded. That’s not meant to be a marketing hook but the actual creative premise. We are building a thing that can only exist if the audience decides it should. That dependency is part of the installation.
